417 Snow Plough
« on: October 15, 2014, 02:37:43 pm »
Just did a deal to buy this 417 for my work, I was sorely tempted to buy it for myself, but the park's needs are greater than mine and it is the right tool for their needs  8)

Very nice! Fair play to you, you're a better man than me. I'd have had it for myself! :D

I assume now you've bought it you'll be the one driving it?

Was it as moose mentioned in the other thread, a torque converter transmission?
Looks a nice truck you have there, I like the look of the 417`s myself.

I must admit it was a hard choice to make, the Mog wil be for my team's use to clear snow when required and get used as a fencing truck for the rest of the time so I will get more than my fair share of it! I'll also be in charge of it's disposal as and when it needs re-homed ;)

Craig, its not like a normal torque converter. I am used to driving a large selection of plant and road going vehicles, there is a standard 4 speed manual shift with a second 2 speed and reverse lever. My understanding is that there is a viscous coupling/torque multiplier set up within the clutch designed for heavy low speed towing... beyond that I have limited knowledge of how it is set up. I did get warned that it can get interesting on steep down hills as you cant rely on the engine braking and need to use the brakes to compensate. although I have found that with similar set up machines a light use of the throttle (enough to keep up the drive) and braking works best.

We don't have any long steep sections at the park so not really an issue  :)

Hi Steve, a mate of mine had a doka with the same transmission set up, it was quite good in snow as the drive was smooth coming in. From memory you just selected your gear as normal using the clutch, let the clutch out, the mog would still be stationary and then bring the revs in and away you when smoothly.

It's a torque convertor put your foot on the brake and lift the clutch if it doesn't stall its a torque convertor. Best bit of advise I can give you is do not slip the clutch ! Because as standard they are fitted with a mineral clutch plate that is very small in comparison to standard Mog clutch. Saying that when we stripped the clutch out of our 416 it had been replaced with a cinted plate, much better.
Other thing about your 417 is Dinitrol dinitrol dinitrol especially the back of the cab the bottom of the 417 cab is the original 120 cab when they fitted the roof extension there are three sheets of metal there and they rot for fun.

Theres 2" if spring lift 2" of packer and about an 1" in the perch so 5" overall. It was originally built with Mog 404 axles but it came to me with uprated RR axles with lockers.. Its useful in the woods but ithas its limitations! It aint a Mog!!

Fitted the 3pt linkage back on today, then delivered the mog and a 10' plough blade to our local blacksmith to get mated :)
