Hans Is Home!
« on: April 28, 2016, 08:58:39 pm »
Well, we did it!
Clever Hans the fire engine has entered the UK on this morning's DFDS ferry from IJMuiden to Newcastle.
A heavy vehicle haulage firm winched him promptly on to their recovery truck and whisked him over to Hexham:

Our first Mercedes-Benz!

Got a new car in the drive!

Everything went really smoothly, despite neither of us having taken ANY vehicle on to a ferry before, let alone a Unimog. Big thanks to Andy Coudyser of VK Cars in Belgium, who trailered Hans up to IJMuiden to meet us and provided such good customer support!

More pics - and no doubt more questions - very soon!

You said it Casto! We keep getting big silly grins on our faces every time we look up the garden. NOVA all done and HMRC are happy, just awaiting confirmation that it's on DVLA system now so we can get it tested and plated, then registered. Oy paperwork!

:D

Good news! Having been brought up with Unimog's I don't notice people looking, but everytime I have a passenger they always say how people look at the 'Mog :P

Hans has passed his first plating test... finally!  :)  :D :D  :-*
Only two re-tests...  ::)
On each occasion, it failed due to its headlights having an EU beam pattern (right-side kick-up) instead of UK. We were totally mystified, as before the first test, we had changed the front headlight lenses for what we we told were correct UK lenses.
We sent those back and got sent a different set - these again came up as EU beam pattern. Another fail. Another lane charge.
At painful cost, we tried changing the entire headlamp unit for ones marked "LINKS VERKEHR" (left traffic)... once again, these had an EU beam pattern with a kick-up to the right when put on the headlight tester.
We switched back to the original lights with German lenses, slapped on a set of beam converter stickers (£6.99) - and passed the test!
We now have a year to figure out what the heck all that was about.
Anybody got any ideas...?

Just to say - the first time, it also failed on having a great big searchlight on the front - apparently it was blocking my view, and had to be removed, just for the test, then we could put it back on! LOL  ::) :D

Cheers,

Rob & Sue

I also had the same problem with the headlights, as I too changed the lens to (what I thought where) left had dip ones and on the first test the tester let them go as he said "for what they are on they'll do". But on my second test with a different tester he was going to fail it on them till a mention that the first tester passed them so the a compromise was for me to wind the beam down and was told there will not replacing for next test . .

Now all we have to do is find suitable UK replacement units... may as well upgrade while we're at it. Anybody got recommendations for nice bright units to fit into the rectangular headlight holes in the bumper? I'm thinking of not going for LEDs as I hear they won't stay clear in snow and ice like nice warm conventional headlamps :)

Suggestions? :D
