well this evenings news update...... not quite going according to plan ......
good things on the list .... All the gears / difflocks / brakes steering and suspension sweet
the engine fits the bay with reasonable clearance ( i am able to check the oil level from the drivers seat )
all greased up and controls all good .
the bad points ..... o dear

the clutch from the series engine has a different spline than the output shaft .... bugger ! being a perkins engine removed and the fact the perkins goes straight in a series .
the bell housing adapter plate although useable with a little drilling only serves to push the pressure plate further away. just as well i guess because the pressure plate is too big and the output shaft isnt long enough .
made a quick call and found that a mate has a petrol mercedes and gonna see if a mog clutch from that will work , i have seen the price of a genuine clutch and that hurt a little from the usual 30 quid for a landy clutch . 180 for a new unit with thrust bearing and release fork sound right ? might have to wait and tidy up the body and cab a bit and save up some cash , but am beginning to question if i should have gone for villagers offer of a mercedes engine in the first place?

gotta be honest though the economy and running costs of the lr lump really make it a good choice to live with . 9 pounds for a service kit must be cheaper than genuine parts .
should i restore this vehicle to an original form or make it an everyday work horse thats fun along the way

hmmm damn this unimog fever
