a g wagon, same reg as your current defender? plus it doesnt matter anyway as the new defenders gonna look like a disco to comply with euro standards, so i presume the running gear underneath is going to be the same as well, mmmmmh independent suspension, all of a sudden land rovers awesome axle articulation is out of the window  :o although now that theyre owned by tata people recon (including dad) that theyll be fitting hardy spicer axles next which can come with diff locks...

g wagon doesn't have a big enough boot to fit my timber in lol. My trucks P reg. To be fair there are so many ideas of the new defender that it could turn out like dumper truck with a jet engine in it  :D

I'll not talk about the two times in one day that I towed a G-Wagon out of ruts with my 110 when I was doing my chainsaw course then...  :P

I do admire the diff arrangement of the G. It's got a lot of choices compared to a Defender but as you say, the price of them is just shocking!

Don't talk to me about L200's. Of the three I owned two had expensive problems at relatively low mileage and the last one cost me more in 4wd system repairs than I paid for my battered Hi-cap 110, which I should add never broke down once!

yeah but the tyres put on at the factory are generally pathetic, with a j rating of 5.5 inch can you blame it, thats the one thing we always change, wider and slightly taller tyres. i could recant several tales of beating several heavily modified landrovers (some of them trialers) with a standard g wagon ;) a lot of it is down to the driver, a driver that doesnt have a clue could get a mog stuck in some of the most basic off road situations :)

You're right about the driver. I know a fella who drives a Kangoo van and he can get that into places where I've seen landys and a Fourtrack get stuck. It's all about reading your route. If I'm completely honest the bloke who got the G stuck kept falling into the tractor ruts through bad planning.

I've never seen a mog get stuck but I can only guess that it would be a struggle to free up when it does?!

yeah, once theyre proper stuck theyre stuck, dad got one stuck once and it took 5 land rovers to get him out ;) hence the only time he ever needed pulling out by landrovers and hes never heard the end of it, not that we didnt pull them out several times ::)

so, bit of progress on the landmog project recently, been remounting the cab so that its isometrically mounted, the back of the cab was just last week mounted with two rubber bushes, and long bolts so that the frame could pull away from the bushes, safe to say my self and Dad werent happy with it, so time for a 3 point conversion  :)

this is how it looked before i started

The back body was 3 point mounted, but im planning to change the mounting system anyway  ::)

back body off

first job, get rid of the current cab mounts

this picture shows how we got the flex before, with an extra long bolt, it still caused the cab to twist though, one of the reasons i am changing it, along with its just proper to do it isometrically :)

rubber bushes off

so got the spider frame mount off (thats what the "triangle" attaches to behind the cab) didnt get a picture of that. as usual the big pins were seized in, one of the few things that do seize on these chassis. so i cut the triangle bits of and just pulled the whole thing off.

what i want to use for the pivot

some pics of the bare chassis

pics of the approx location of pivot

chopped the origional back body mount off

clamped the pivot into its final resting place

currently drawing the brackets to hold the pivot to the chassis and the cab to the pivot up on auto cad, then i'll get them plasma cut and it'll be time for some welding :)

Any questions feel free to ask.

Thoughts, ideas and opinions welcome as usual  :D

Cheers, Brian  ;D

Cheers for taking the time to update with loads of pictures. That thing is going to be a great toy when it's done.

I've seen them done with a Transit cab before which would leave more room for the bed on the back. That's the only down side I can see to this one.

Hi

Looks a great machine, would be even better with the three point linkage!

Just to point out that you CAN go from high to low on the move in a Land Rover and I have done many times.

The lack of cross axle locks is a huge omission by Land Rover, but can be fairly cheaply overcome with after market parts. I have used Quaife, ARB, Detroit lockers and Trutrak over the years, and when carefully driven they can go some places. I have had mine on the summit of Ben Nevis!

Thanks, this is soon going to be for sale soon as we now have to many projects :( so the mog thats been with me all my life is going to leave.

could you go into low on the move even in early land rovers ???
Does a landrover have a syncromesh in reverse? ;)
and you can't brag about Nevis, somebody got prosecuted for driving up it in a frontera earlier this year :P

Yes you could, I have one of the first 500 land rovers and i can do the hi-lo thing in that.

No syncromesh in reverse, a great shame, but it is 1/4 the price of a Mog

Why cant I brag, I have done it! With full permission. Vauxhall asked me to take a Fontera to the top, but baulked at the modifications needed.

Having said all that, if the land mog has hydraulics and a 3 point linkage at the back I may be interested!

"brag" was a poor choice of words, it is an impressive feet. but i have heard about this, took me a while to find it, but check out 1928

i doubt the landmog would suit your needs, the engine produces 65 BHP, so 100 bhp at the pto isnt gonna be easy! :D
